It’s the return of ARIA Award winning Sydney artist Montaigne, with the release of her new single last year ‘For Your Love,’ a brutally personal and a bold musical leap, culminating in a fascinating and intimate single with a dark underbelly.

‘For Your Love’ was created by Montaigne with international songwriters Mozella (Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’) and Kyle Shearer (Dua Lipa‘s ‘Scared to Be Lonely’). Musically it is new terrain for Montaigne – twisted pop that glides effortlessly through moods and genres but with her distinctive voice at the fore.
“I was reflecting on my first and so far only boyfriend,” Montaigne explains. “It was a short relationship, but it was long enough. The first few lyrics from ‘For Your Love’ hark back to ‘Because I Love You’: ‘I have been a snake, I have been a dog.’”
“It’s supposed to be a little uncomfortable, the whole song is supposed to emphasize being dehumanized. Retroactively that is how it felt. Especially me as a fiercely independent person. To have gotten sucked into that, I know I’m better than that. The song is a valuable documentation of that moment in my life. It’s a cautionary tale. It was a good learning experience.”
‘For Your Love’ was fuelled by baroque pop, orchestral folk and arena rock, with influences on the album ranging from Nick Cave to Carly Rae Jepsen, Talking Heads to Manchester Orchestra, Perfume Genius to Thundercat.
To celebrate the single release, Montaigne has also announced a run of national tour dates for April 2019, starting with Sydney’s Factory Theatre on April 11 and finishing up on the Gold Coast on April 28. This tour will mark Montaigne’s first live shows since the national Glorious Heights headline tour last year, which saw her perform to sold-out rooms across the country.
2016 was a breakout year for Montaigne with her debut album Glorious Heights receiving critical and popular acclaim, winning her an ARIA Award for Breakthrough Artist. Glorious Heights featured Montaigne’s single ‘Because I Love You,’ which reached No.25 in the triple j Hottest 100 and established Montaigne as one of Australia’s most distinctive new lyricists.
Now aged 23, Montaigne is still undergoing finishing touches to her sophomore album, due for release this year. While fans will hear the input of both new and familiar collaborators, it is still very much Montaigne steering her creative vision.
