After more than 3 years, the Apple TV is getting an upgrade. While there will be much more emphasis on an app based ecosystem rather than just a way to stream your desktop, the hardware has been significantly reworked to match the change.
The new Apple TV now supports Siri. The helpful, sometimes sarcastic, assistant now helps in the selection of films and time starts at your command. You can also search movies by your favorite actor or a particular genre. Of course, even apps on the Apple TV can be installed. The control is now completely revamped; a large touch panel and a Siri button takes the stage on the control and also an acceleration sensor is installed. The touchpad enables you to control not only the menu, but also games and apps which take advantage of this. As a new operating system for its Box Apple now relies on tvOS. The hardware specs show that an A8 chip is used – powerful stuff.
New apps can be found in the App Store which is now directly accessible from the Apple TV. Of course, many Apple apps are preinstalled as you have come to expect. From the get go you will be able to look at the weather, or launch your favorite music via iTunes in the latest iteration of tvOS.
The price of the new Apple TV is $149 (USD) for the 32 GB model and $199 (USD) for a version with 64 GB.
The new Apple TV will be available from the end of October.
