We called it! Finally some news from Sony has been confirmed and announced. All the eyes are looking at its virtual reality prototype for PlayStation 4, given the Matrix inspired name of Project Morpheus.
Occulus Rift, prepare for a battle. The wearable monitor hosts a white visor with a traditional Sony black “blast shield” along the eye line. It is a gadget so of course it sports blue LEDs glowing along the devices edge.
Games can start to be developed too as Sony plans to release a prototype for developers. Sound familiar?
Shuhei Yoshida, the head honcho of the PlayStation division spoke at GDC ’14 and said the announcement originated through the vast changes of the gaming world – especially that of the technology involved. He was quoted:
“Virtual reality, may well shape the future of games by increasing immersion with a sense of presence while playing. We believe Morpheus will further enhance the world of PlayStation 4 with seamless integration with PlayStation Camera, DualShock 4, and PS Move.”
Indeed, they have come a long way. Mr Yoshida mentioned the first prototype was literally a headset duct taped with a PS Move remote on top.
On board with the development already includes Epic Games and Crytek. Anton Mikhailov says the company is treating VR as brand new a medium, not just a peripheral to be left in the corner.
Sony London was in attendance and demonstrated The Deep, a submerged sea adventure, to prove how far in development they had come. In addition, Morpheus is also compatible with Thief and even the previously dubbed “Oculus Rift exclusive” EVE Valkyrie.
We can’t yet call if the device will be a success since it is in its early stages but certainly the future of the PlayStation console seems interesting. The information of its full specs is limited, so far we know it will feature a 1080p display, full 360 degree positional tracking, and low latency (it will feel real… which is the point) all packaged in an ergonomic design.
I’m keen to pre-order right now….
