[dropcaps style=’2′]2014 has been an emerging year so far, the WWE has entered a new era and from inside the bubble it’s obvious this is a new golden age for the company. For years, the Divas division has suffered a curse of being the staple “popcorn match” at events with the Divas title not given a presiding postion in the gold standards. AJ Lee gave it a great wake up call in her time, we still had to endure the “alpha female battle” which has long become cliche, but she brought a new element to it with a great crazy persona and something more important… talent.[/dropcaps]
AJ Lee has talent. She isn’t a model trying to find a way to springboard her way into Playboy, she has talent and a passion for the industry which has long been needed. She has taken a sabatical and hopefully upon her return we see a refined wrestler.
Then came Paige.
After it became clear to the company that AJ needed time off, they had to find a champion and instead of slapping it onto someone with a movie premier to go on about, an NXT graduate emerged from the bright lights (though that’s mostly because she’s pale).
We have previously talked about how excited we were to see Paige as the Women’s Champion, and the opinion still remains strong.
Paige has brought a major overhaul and a grand refresh of the division. AJ had talent, but Paige has TALENT. What she lacks in pigment, she has strength in place, this is one strong woman. Her finishing submission is fantastic and her position as champion could encourage new female talents to go for the big league of WWE as well as encourage existing Divas to answer the call to stepping up their game.
Someone who honestly I never thought would step up but has… Alicia Fox.
She has more than definitely picked up her game, she has brutal moves… and on purpose, not because of botches. She has shifted personality into a crazy bitch who doesn’t care if her behaviour is faux pas… this works for us. And it works for her, the Divas division and ultimately the WWE.
The whole ‘losing it’ after being defeated gimmick is great, but sooner than later she should start racking up some wins as she did last Raw and then make the move for the title. I don’t want to see Paige lose the belt soon, this should be a timely build up as Paige’s position right now is helping her career and the division as a whole. Alicia Fox should form a feud with another diva or even go for the US or Intercontinental belts Chyna style.
Okay, that’s not likely… but with an impending new division being brewed in NXT right now it couldn’t hurt. We might then see a great bout between yin and yang. What a pool of talent that should be established by then.
In addition to these two powers of Divas development stands a sleeping giant. Emma. She needs to quickly ditch this clumsy gimmick, seperate herself as “Santino’s Apprentice” and make her own character… she has the potential to be as much of an impact as Paige.
We will be watching closely and hopeing for a great development.
