[dropcaps style=’2′]It is the tenth anniversary of Ubuntu with the current version 14.10 aka Utopic Unicorn celebrating a decade since their humble beginnings in October 2004.[/dropcaps]
It looks almost like the LTS 14.04 at first glance, there is seemingly only a new wallpaper. However, Canonical has updated the packages, including the Linux kernel, and updated drivers. The current packages come as usual from the Debian repository (Debian making some news regarding being forked). Ubuntu 14.10 also has the Linux kernel 16.3 integrated, which was distributed publicly in August 2014. This kernel will be soon be made available for the previous Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
This version is also proving to go beyond the normal desktop user, Ubuntu 14.10 also comes with Juju. The most recent version of this service orchestration program (SOP) makes it easier than ever to deploy and scale cloud applications on public and private cloud.
You can download a preview version of Unity 8, Ubuntu’s next-generation user interface, if you’re interested in how Ubuntu will look further down the line. Designed to support a single user experience across the smartphone, the tablet and the PC, it uses the current version of Mir, the cross-platform display server being developed by the Ubuntu community.
Remarkably, this distro has a remarkable consistent performance on x32, x64, ARM and Power8 – this only means soon you’ll see Ubuntu on more than a desktop; think phones and tablets… a brilliant showing of how far the project has come in 10 years.
Back in 2004, Linux was already established as an enterprise server platform, but free software was not a part of everyday life for most computer users as it is today. The results of today are all thanks to Mark Shuttleworth and a small team of developers from one of the most established Linux projects Debian.
The result was Ubuntu.
The vision was determined for Ubuntu: free software, available to everybody on the same terms, and funded through a portfolio of services provided by Canonical.
