We all heard the news last year at Mobile World Congress 2013 that Mozilla released their new mobile OS to compete against the flooded Android and iOS market. It is 2014 and Mozilla has revealed seven new mobile phones which will be released worldwide… except for the United States.
This Great Flood of $25 smartphones will be taking on the mobile world using an open platform that works on almost every device that has an Ethernet port or Wi-Fi card… the web.
The waves of this flood will include Huawei, LG, Alcatel OneTouch and ZTE all of whom will offer the new Firefox OS. Even Panasonic will use Firefox OS to power a smart TV.
Already, there are Firefox powered phones in India, Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Venezuela and other places where iPhones and Galaxy phones haven’t reached yet. With the major players out of the picture, Mozilla sees an opportunity.
500 million of these new cheap smartphones are predicted to be sold in China and India alone this year. This equates to about half of global sales. For the majority of these buyers, it will be their first ever smartphone.
Alcatel and ZTE promised to bring multiple dual-core phones after the announcement was made.
The Chief Operations Officer of Mozilla, Jay Sullivan, said that the endeavour was simply to bring more people online. With a $25 price tag, it’s hard to find a fault in the implementation of the business strategy so far.
If we get our hands on one, we will conduct a review.
