You In Colour started in early 2013 and released their EP called ‘Changing Seasons’ on the 9th of November 2013. This alternative rock band originates from Newcastle (few hours drive north of Sydney) NSW, Australia and consists of 5 teenage members.
The 5 male members of this upcoming band are Sebastian Wattam, who replaced former vocals Kurtis Devall (vocals), Louie Hopson (guitar), Callan Hoppe (guitar), Matt Bright (bass) and Jim Maher (drums).
Since their start, this teenage band have played gigs with the American band Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and two Australian bands Glass Towers and Masketta Fall. With influences from American bands You Me At Six, All Time Low, Mayday Parade and The Getaway Plan, they have a strong rock and kick ass presence in their songs. Their 4 Tracks on their EP give off a ‘I’m here and ready to get you rocking’ feel. I find myself rocking out to their songs way to easily, this just goes to show the massive potential these Aussie rockers have.
Their EP ‘Changing Seasons’ includes 4 tracks called:
- Insomnia
- Something More Than Nothing
- Somebody
- Wide Eyes
The first track Insomnia starts with a great instrumental introduction and then the lead vocal shows his edgy, Aussie vocals. The upbeat sound is a great match for the meaning of the track, it talks about being young and living each moment and growing up later. It brings the teenage attitude of being young and having fun before having to grow up and how it may seem impossible to grow up and leave the fun years for a 9-5 job and the responsibilities of adulthood.
The second track ‘Something More Than Nothing’ starts with an attention grabbing guitar intro. This gives the listener a interest to see where the song heads. This band uses the guitars to create a grungy and rock vibe. This track shares the message that you have the power to make a change in the world and that you possess a voice and should never sit in silence and be pushed around.
Somebody is the third track of the EP and is a song that portrays the emotion of sadness and being hurt. The track talks about loosing your ‘somebody’ and feeling like half of you is missing. The lyrics create a heartfelt track of a sudden breakup and not knowing why. This is a softer track but still has a lot of power through the vocals and instrumentals.
Lastly, the fourth track ‘Wide Eyes’ begins with a riff that reminds me of old school rock and then grows into the new age alternative rock of You In Colours. The energy behind this track always pumps me up and I have fallen in love with it. I also love how the lead vocals has an Australian accent while he sings, this brings a tough and original sound to the band. This track depicts a story about a boy who is in a state of depression and is giving up. He has had a tough life but You In Colour gives the message of never giving up, they ‘don’t see the point of giving up for’. This is a song that can give you a boost and make a bad day great by showing you that you shouldn’t give up because life can get better. This is such a great message to portray.
This band is only beginning and I can’t wait to follow their journey. I really do think that You In Colour has great potential and hopefully will do great in the music scene in both Australia and overseas. The band are continuing to book gigs around Australia and are working on their first album so keep a close eye on them. Definitely give this brand new band a go by buying their EP, sharing their music and maybe even going and seeing them live at a gig, I know I definitely will.
They are also an opening act for American band ‘The Almost’ in their ‘Fear Inside Our Bones’ Australian tour on the 20th of April at The Small Ballroom in Newcastle (18+ event). For tickets, check out The Small Ballroom website.
